Record number of participants in the Gabčík Memorial

On Saturday, 31 May 2025, the 5th Special Forces Regiment's patron was commemorated. The Jozef Gabčík Memorial was officially opened in Poluvsie.
This unique running event pays tribute to Jozef Gabčík, who was involved in the assassination of the Reich Protector, Reinhard Heydrich, on 27 May 1942 in Prague. The 31st edition of the event had the highest number of participants in its history, with up to 500 runners taking part. The traditional running route led from Poluvsie to the 5th Army Corps in Žilina.
"This event reminds us of courage and sacrifice. We are pleased that interest in it is growing every year, which proves that people still value the legacy of our hero," said Colonel Peter Žochňák, commander of the 5th Special Forces Regiment in Žilina.
The main race was joined by 155 members of various security forces, competing in seven teams. Children's races were organised for the youngest participants, with a total of 140 children divided into three age categories taking part.
The programme of events also included two solemn commemorations: one at Gabčík's birthplace in Poluvsie and the other at the memorial in Žilina. These ceremonies were attended by distinguished guests from diplomatic circles, including the Czech Ambassador, Rudolf Jindrák; the British Ambassador, Nigel Baker; and the French Ambassador, Nicolas Suran.
There was also an accompanying programme for visitors at the regiment's premises, mainly for children, including demonstrations of weapons and equipment, family activities, and a presentation of the work of professional soldiers from our elite unit.
